Celebrate Chinese New Year 2010 Sunday, February 14th – the Year of the Tiger! I read a terrific article about entertaining in a recent issue of Every Day with Rachel Ra y magazine that was, to say the least, highly entertaining!  Clever and experienced party givers compiled a list of the “must have” statistics when giving a party that are well worth sharing here! Color Trends for 2010! Each year, we’re treated to a wonderful array of new trends, ranging from food to fashion to color!  Color predictions, in particular, have always held great fascination for me!  What will we be seeing in home furnishings?  Clothing?  Paint colors?  The answer is delivered every January from a company called the Pantone Color Institute! Pantone Colors Pantone has been around for 45 years, first creating a color spectrum that allowed industry wide color matching and now providing the definitive word on the year’s color to watch!  The color of the year is a product of study on how color influences thought, emotion and physical reactions taken into consideration with the current social climate. 2009 – Mimosa For example, the color of the year for 2009 was Mimosa – a warm, optimistic yellow reflecting hope in a time of political change and economic uncertainty – just think of Michelle Obama’s inauguration ensemble! 2008 – Iris In 2008, the winner was Iris, a shade of deep blue with hints of purple.  The blue was felt to be reassuring in a complicated world and the purple added a mystical and spiritual touch! 2010 – Turquoise So without further ado, the color for 2010 is a gorgeous turquoise blue!  Turquoise, according to Pantone, “combines the serene qualities of blue with the invigorating aspects of green.”  Like the turquoise waters of tropical islands, this color is said to be soothing and provide an escape from the everyday world

New Year’s Traditions Around the World! Noisemakers and champagne comprise the basics of a New Year’s Eve celebration at my home, along with a moment or two for remembering the past year and its special moments.  But it’s really interesting to see how this same event is celebrated around the world! I recently wrote about the South’s tradition of serving the dish Hoppin’ John , which includes black-eyed peas to represent coins or wealth and pork for prosperity.  But there are many more fun and interesting traditions from every part of the globe!  Perhaps you already observe one of these “good luck” practices in your home or are looking for some new ways to welcome in the New Year! Holland – Doughnuts are the required food to remind us that we have come “full circle!” Peru – residents of this country walk around their neighborhood with an empty suitcase to insure travel in the coming year!   This would be a pretty funny sight to see! Portugal/Spain – twelve grapes are eaten, one at each strike of the clock at midnight, for a year’s worth of good luck!  Martha Stewart’s clever twist on this tradition is to thread the 12 grapes on a bamboo skewer and serve each in a glass of champagne just before midnight! Tip of the Week:  Cook up Some New Year Luck! Hoppin’ John is a traditional Southern dish that dates back to the 1800’s and when served on New Year’s Day is said to bring good luck!  The dish is a combination of black eyed peas, pork and rice, but it is the peas that that are thought to bring good luck due to their resemblance to coins and a promise of wealth! Even better, since pigs symbolize prosperity, pork is another key ingredient.  There are many different versions of this recipe, but Hallmark Magazine has published their own interpretation that is more like a soup than a stew, perfect for pairing with corn bread! My lunches were either boring or repeats most of this week, so I didn’t take any pictures until today: green salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, kalamata olives and olive oil-vinegar dressing, hummus , pita chips , and a wedge of pomegranate . The shmoo and I like sharing a pomegranate when they’re in season. We lay out plastic on the table and load up on kitchen towels, then tear into the beautiful fruit and eat the jewel-like seeds one by one

Host a Terrific Girl Friends’ Get Together and Get a Job Done! Spending quality time with your girl friends may seem like impossibility during the crazy holiday season, but I have some fun ideas for combining work and play! Card Writing Party – Invite friends over to tackle the task of writing and addressing holiday cards.  You’ll supply the wine and cheese, a bunch of pens and the guests will bring the rest!  Imagine how quickly those cards will get written as you chat and eat! It ‘s a Wrap – This gathering is intended to get those presents wrapped and ribboned!  You may not be able to invite as many ladies as at the Card Writing Party, but it’s still fun and effective!  Have guests arrive with unwrapped gifts, as well as their own ribbon, boxes and wrap.  Have extra scissors and rolls of tape on hand.   Terrific snacks are essential! Girl Friends’ Get Togethers

Tip of the Week – Write a Terrific Holiday Letter! If I could, I would love to write a thoughtful note in every one of my Christmas cards, but with our ever growing mailing list, it just isn’t possible!  And so, like a lot of families, I put an insert into my cards. For the past few years, I’ve assembled a photo collage of our activities and travels throughout the past year.  I type up short captions and place those under the photos offering a two minute recap!   One of the fringe benefits of the collage approach is that I’m not limited to the photos where all five of us look acceptable! For a more traditional letter, there are some tips for making your letter a “must read!” Keep it Short -  your letter shouldn’t be longer than a single page!  If your letter is more like a novel, it probably won’t get read during this busy season! Have a Sense of Humor -  keep the tone of your letter light and fun!  A bit of humor also goes a long way to offset any tendency to brag! Be Positive -  even if the past year has had sad occasions that you would like to share, offer this news in as upbeat a way as possible. Use a Theme -  choosing a theme for your family’s letter will make the writing so much easier!  Was your year characterized by change?  Or lots of travel?  Many “firsts”?  Let this be the framework for what you write
