Best of luck, parents
This is it, folks. This is the morning that every competitive, professional Delhi couple with a three-year-old stumbles out of bed straight to the laptop and, still bleary from a night of restless sleep, clicks on their favourite school’s website and scans the list of applicants to see if their little darling has made the cut. It is a day of elation and self-congratulation for a select few.

You just don’t think of principals as black.
You know, the same way you just don’t think of women as your boss , or Asians as doing much besides pulling rickshaws , or Mexicans as anything but fruit-pickers or housecleaners . YOU know. Isn’t everyone who COUNTS … just like me ?

Education
To begin with, thank you. Thank you to all of those people who have devoted themselves to teaching. Being an educator has to be one of the most difficult jobs around, especially if you’re good at it. Yes, it has tremendous rewards, but it’s hard work wrought with stress and at times a great deal of frustration. Having started and run a private school, I certainly have my own opinions about the subject of education, and I suppose about educators in general. I believe that every student, every child, every person is unique. And if you’re a good teacher, you approach your job with that in mind

Charter Schools in the UK are a VERY BAD IDEA
I was listening to Women’s Hour this morning and they were discussing the introduction of a 10 hour school day in the UK, as has been tried in some schools in the US, specifically aimed at lower income families. They start off discussing the virtues of this, the extra hours enabling time for reading, art, music etc, the types of non-traditionally academic subjects that children from lower income families are more likely to miss out on. They then give a startling figure that the schools where this has been tested in the states college admissions has risen dramatically from 10% to 80%

Charter School Not a ‘State Actor,’ Court Rules
A federal appeals court has ruled that an Arizona charter school is not a “state actor” for purposes of federal civil rights law. The court upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit filed by a former teacher at the school who alleged that the school deprived him of his liberty interest in finding other work.

What’s that I hear? Oh right, the closet door swinging shut.
I go to a small, private, Christian university. I enjoy small class sizes, one on one professor to student attention when I need it, access to specialized and professional staff, close and personal friends, an atmosphere of faith that I more or less appreciate, and other benefits of private school. However, with church dogma comes one quasi-inevitability: closet life.

When Private Schools Take Public Dollars: What’s the Place of Accountability School Voucher Programs?
ABSTRACT: Voucher opponents often argue that it’s unfair to hold public schools accountable for results under the No Child Left Behind Act and various state rules while allowing private schools that participate in voucher programs to receive taxpayer dollars without similar accountability. We at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute don’t entirely buy that argument but we also believe there’s room for a reasonable middle ground.
