Better Safe Than…
Better Safe Than… Right around this time every year, just as the swallows that wind up in Capistrano start thinking of going even further south, I think about getting recertified. As an adoptive mom, I had to do what most parents don’t – take a course, not just in parenting, but also in emergency CPR and first aid. Not only did I have to take the course, so did my various babysitters and anyone who regularly spent time at my house.

Why we chose private school
I have a lot of topics that swirl around in my head. This is one of those topics I wanted to discuss. Why post about it now? Well, right now is when you need to start thinking about next year, especially if you want your child to attend a private school. Now that the “disclaimer” is out-of-the-way, here is our family’s personal reasons for choosing private school for our kids. I’m going to be very honest and tell you we didn’t initially set out to put the kids in a private school. Much the opposite. We began looking for houses in the spring of 2008 and also began researching preschools for A around the same time. After purchasing our house, we continued looking for preschools, but on a much smaller scale. The city our home is in has quite a large school system. Many of the schools are great, a few are not. Location of our home didn’t seem to decide which of the schools our kids would attend. Sadly, our kids were assigned to one of the “not so great” schools in our district. Neither hubs nor myself were very thrilled with this news. So, we started looking at our options. In Ohio, there is something called Open Enrollment. Open Enrollment basically means that a school district allows children who live outside of the district to attend their school. These placements though, are based on space and class size. This was an option, and still is actually. The other option was a parochial school. There are several right around our neighborhood. While we are not Catholic, I looked up the local Catholic school and found they had terrific recommendations (trust me I did my homework for all the private schools in our area).

Are people who go to private school smarter than those who go to public school?
What a hard question. You simple cannot answer this with a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ as the next question would be “why?” followed by normal stuttering of “because……..[insert a quick and somewhat reasonable answer].

School Admissions Update
Middle School Bluesor, how did s/he grow up so fast? It seems to be a given these days that elementary schools try – or should try – to educate the “whole child.” What that usually means is that they are looking at social-emotional, physical and cognitive development, rather than just “teaching to the test.” At least you would hope that your school is doing that, especially in the early grades, K-3. But what happens after third grade

Staying Sane
Staying Sane (while searching for the perfect school) It’s that time of year, when some of us breathe a big sigh of relief, exhausted but triumphant – we’ve gotten into a school. But for some of us the school search looms ahead. Unfortunately for you, it’s not so far ahead that you can forget about it all together, but you have some fantasy that it can wait.

Homeschooling: The Good, The Bad, and The Next Generation
My mother asked my siblings and me some questions recently about our homeschooling experience. She wanted to know whether we had enjoyed homeschooling, and what were our favorite and least favorite parts of it. And she wanted to know whether we would homeschool our own children.

Liberal government in Ontario to introduce more explicit sex education in schools
Story from the left-wing Globe and Mail . Excerpt: The days of euphemisms and innuendo in Ontario’s classrooms are numbered, with the province set to roll out a new sex education curriculum next fall built on clear and explicit language that has raised objections from conservative parent groups. The revision, outlined in 208 pages that were quietly posted on the Ministry of Education’s website in January, will for the first time teach Grade 3 pupils about such topics as sexual identity and orientation, and introduce terms like “anal intercourse” and “vaginal lubrication” to children in Grades 6 and 7

Rubbing out the Rubber Rooms
Check it out, this is absolutely crazy what these big government unions have been doing! How about we get rid of both the unions and Department of Education? That would solve a ton of the problems that we see. We spend on average $10,000 per year on every student, yet the results are worse than ever

Superintendent Michelle Rhee’s fight against the Washington, D.C. teacher unions
I’ve always believed that the best way to learn about a topic is by understanding the topic as a fight between two opposing teams. And that’s how we’re going to learn about the Washington D.C. school system in this balanced post at the libertarian magazine Reason.(Not the usual conservative stuff I post 100% of the time) Here’s the situation: D.C.

Your school’s website is a marketing and budget priority
In my work with independent and faith-based schools across the nation, administrators often ask the question: “where should I spend my marketing dollars first?” The answer is clear – your school’s website. When a prospective parent Google’s your school, what is their first impression? What kind of image of your school is conveyed

My mum spent my private school fees on HER cosmetic surgery…
My client, Nileen Namita, appears with daughter Rachel, 16, in a double page spread today in the Daily Mail newspaper. Unsurprisingly, because it is the sort of story readers often have strong views on, it is one of the best read on the Daily Mail website and at the time of writing had attracted over 500 comments from all over the world

School and your autistic child
As I mentioned previously, it is important to choose the right school for your child, either through the public school system or private school. If you choose private school that includes therapy, the cost of autism programs is not always in line with the benefits received. You need to consider the overall cost.
