There are several issues about the school and qualification that seem unfair, elitist or just plain stupid. Not cool. If I were paying full tuition, I would be paying over $50,000 a year for: auditorium-class seats missing desks, washing machines that leave clothes sitting in a pool of water, air-conditionless rooms, broken shower faucets… So I’m whining.  It’s just that–for a private school at least, Barnard is a little lackadaisical (in terms of taking care of problems) and a little…simple.  After all, the up-and-coming new building on campus is only going to be five stories high, while across the street Columbia’s new construction one-ups us with its high-rise steel and glass giant.  Even the lawns are better at Columbia (guess what the groundkeeping budget is and why it’s so high) and other private–even public–institutions.  It’s not that I want to whine, especially not in a blog.  It’s just that I had an idealized view of all private schools in my mind, and only part of it was correct.  (I was right to some extent about the opulence of private schools: there’s an oriental rug in my English classroom.) Well, there you have it.  My daily rant.

Marcus finished his first week at Doane Stuart on Friday.  I took a day and some to gather some thoughts and observations, both on his state and mine. 1) In general, Marcus seems to be happier.  He giggles more, he laughs more, he has children to play with. 2) Marcus was sad on Friday.  He cried going in and didn’t want me to leave.  He was crying when I came to pick him up, but when I think about the timing I wonder if it was because of nap/quiet time…  He wakes up badly often.  If they woke him to get him ready to go home, I understand how that could have thrown him off.  He was actually cranky the whole evening, but Saturday morning woke up happy and started getting ready for “school” on his own.  Bad day, maybe?

The first week is over

My eldest son is starting Kindergarten in just a few days.  I’m not having the emotional reaction that I see many mom’s having over this monumental event, perhaps because, for better or worse, Nicholas has been attending daycare since he was 12 weeks old.
