In July, volunteers from BPS and Lesley University collected new and gently used books for BPS libraries at Fenway Park thanks to the Kevin Youkilis Hits for Kids Foundation as part of the first annual Batting for Books book drive. With already tens of thousands of books donated, and thousands more new books from Houghton Mifflin and New England Mobile Book Fair on the way, OIIT will distribute books to BPS libraries this fall. BOSTON — Kevin Youkilis Hits for Kids announced the launch of the first “ Batting for Books” campaign to benefit the Boston Public Schools . Together with the City of Boston and the Boston Red Sox , the slugger’s charitable organization is dedicated to enhancing the Boston Public Schools by collecting over 100,000 new or gently used books to donate to the schools’ libraries.

Happy Birthday L4L! It’s hard to believe that we began training teachers and deploying laptops through the Laptops for Learning (L4L) initiative one year ago this week. From the art teacher who took her students on a virtual tour of the Louvre in Paris to the ELA teacher who uses iMovie to record students’ oral reading as a formative assessment tool, we continue to be impressed by the innovative uses of the laptops in classrooms across the district.

Officials from Target and The Heart of America Foundation surprised students at the Mather on Tuesday morning with an announcement that their school has been selected for an extensive makeover of its library. Next fall, the space will be transformed with new computers, shelving, furniture, carpeting, murals, and more than 2,000 new books.
