Haitian Earthquake Aid: How is your school helping?

As we watch Haiti and its people in need of love, compassion, support, food, water, and health care, one of Martin Luther King Jr.’s rhetorical questions comes to mind. “Life’s most urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” Most of us are not in a position to help physically, but we can contribute the commodity that lets aid agencies like Doctors Without Borders , Partners in Health , and the Red Cross support the Haitian people- money. As Stephanie Strom argues in the New York Times ( Teaching Americans What Haiti Needs: Money ): “Don’t send shoes, send money.

Supreme Court: Recent Reform Proposals

Today’s report in Times of India on the Law Ministry’s consideration of the proposal to reform the Supreme Court is confusing. It wrongly suggests that the Law Commission has recommended setting up of four Supreme Courts in metros and a Federal Court in Delhi, and that this has been endorsed by the CJI. The Law Commission considered the issue in its 229th Report , and recommended setting up of 4 Cassation Courts, and a Constitution Bench in Delhi with the existing strength of the Supreme Court.

More Yoga = Less Jail Time

Today, the BBC reported that inmates in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh will be released from 15 days early for every three months they spend practicing yoga. “The authorities say the lessons help to improve the prisoners’ self-control and reduce aggression,” according to the article.4,000 inmates are taking advantage of the program, and many of the prisoners go on to become yoga instructors after they are released. That sounds like a good deal to me

ADI Driving School Insurance

I was talking to some driving school instructors recently about the recent snow closures and loss of earnings for our industry, when an important point was raised. Not all ADI teaching insurance will cover an instructor while giving learner drivers tuition in adverse weather conditions like the one we experienced earlier in January 2010, and each instructor needs to check the small print of the cerificate policy to see if there are any exemptions in this or other circumstances

How NOT to teach about a tragedy

In AP history I’ve decided to take a little detour and focus on the history of Haiti for a couple of days. We started by watching the video of the Haitian ambassador confronting Pat Robertson’s claim that during the Haitian Revolution the slaves made a “pact with the devil” so that they could throw off colonial rule
