Last Thursday morning, I attended a meeting of the Unorganized Workers’ Federation (UWF). The UWF has historically been one of the most important non-partisan movements of the urban poor in Chennai, and they continue to organize people all over the state. This was a regular meeting of members from slums all over the city, in which they updated one another on problems facing individual neighborhoods, and strategized how best to work together.
